What is a train speed test?

A live reading of your journey — not the timetable, not the train’s maximum, but your actual speed right now.

A train speed test is a browser tool that uses your phone’s GPS to show how fast your train is moving right now — not the speed written in the timetable, and not the fastest speed the train could ever do, but your real speed over the ground at this moment.

It works completely independently of the railway. You do not need a train number, a PNR, a route or an onboard screen. Your phone listens to GPS satellites, watches how your position changes every second, and turns that movement into a live speed in km/h or mph.

That is why the number keeps changing: it climbs as the train pulls out of a station, holds steady on a fast, straight stretch, and falls as the train brakes for a curve, a signal or the next stop. By the end of the trip you also have your top speed, average speed and total distance.

How GPS measures train speed

No app, no railway connection — the calculation happens on your phone, in your browser.

Your phone’s GPS receiver compares signals from several satellites to fix your position, again and again, about once every second. When two fixes are a known distance apart and the time between them is known, speed is simply that distance divided by that time.

Modern phones can also use the tiny shift in the satellite signals themselves — the Doppler effect — to estimate speed even more smoothly. Either way, the reading describes your phone moving with the train. It is not read from the train’s own systems.

Trains themselves have long measured speed their own way — with wheel and axle sensors, trackside timing and cab instruments only the driver could see. Passengers were left with a timetable average. GPS puts that same live number in every passenger’s pocket.

How fast do trains go?

Typical speeds by train type, the fastest trains in service, and how a live GPS reading compares with the timetable.

Typical speed by train type

The homepage reference table — now with the real-world average alongside the top speed.

Figures are broad reference values. Measure live on the train for what your journey is doing now. An average is always lower than a top speed, because every journey includes stops, slow approaches and acceleration.

Fastest trains in service

Maximum operating speeds of well-known trains in India and around the world.

These are design and permitted maximums. On a given day, the actual speed depends on the track, signals and stops — which is exactly what the live test above shows you.

Live GPS vs timetable vs onboard display

Three different numbers, three different jobs — so a difference between them is normal.

km/h to mph — quick reference

60 km/h = 37 mph • 100 km/h = 62 mph • 130 km/h = 81 mph

What the speedometer shows you

Everything is measured live, on your device, for the whole journey.

Real-time live speed

A reading that updates every second, in km/h or mph — switch any time with the toggle on the meter.

Top speed

The fastest moment of your trip is remembered, so you can see how quick the train really got.

Average speed

Not just the peak — the honest average for the whole journey, ready to compare with the timetable.

Distance covered

How far you have travelled during the trip, tracked alongside the speed.

Private by design

Your location is processed on your own device. It is never stored, never sent to a server, and no account is needed.

Not just for trains

The same GPS meter works in a car, bus, metro, on a bike or on foot — if you are moving, it can measure it.

Reading stuck at zero?

Almost every problem is a GPS signal problem — and most fix themselves.

Location is blocked

Allow location for this site in your browser and phone settings, then tap Start again. Where a "precise location" option appears, keep it on.

Weak signal in the coach

Sit near a window and keep the phone out of a bag or pocket. A metal coach body, a large station roof and dense city buildings can all weaken GPS.

The train is in a tunnel

Satellites cannot reach underground, so the reading pausing is normal — it does not mean the train has stopped. A fresh reading returns on its own once you are back outside.

You left the page

Switching to another app or tab can pause the meter. Come back to this page, keep it in front of you, and wait for a fresh reading.

Best conditions for an accurate reading

GPS works best with a clear view of the sky. On open track, a phone reading is normally very close to the train’s real speed. These habits help:

  • ✓  Tap Start after the train is moving, and let the first few readings settle
  • ✓  Take a window seat and keep the phone out of bags and pockets
  • ✓  Set your phone location to high accuracy
  • ✓  Expect pauses in tunnels, underground metro sections and large stations
  • ✓  If a reading looks odd, refresh the page for a clean session

Remember: this is a phone GPS estimate, not a railway-calibrated meter. In normal conditions it is close enough to follow, enjoy and understand your journey.

Questions, answered.

How does the train speed test work?

Your phone's GPS measures how fast you are moving. Open the tool, allow location access, and it shows your train's live speed in km/h or mph — updated every second.

No. Your location is processed on your device to calculate speed and is never stored or sent to our servers.

GPS needs a clear view of the sky. In tunnels or deep cuttings the signal drops and the reading can fall to zero until the signal returns.

Yes. Use the km/h | mph toggle on the speedometer card to switch units instantly — the live reading, top speed and average all convert together.

No. The test runs completely in your mobile browser. Nothing to install, no sign-up, and it works on Android and iPhone alike.

Vande Bharat Express runs up to 160 km/h on select routes, Gatimaan Express runs at 160 km/h, and Rajdhani and Shatabdi Express trains run at 130–140 km/h. These are maximum operating speeds — on a real journey, your live speed depends on track, signals and stops.
